About the X-Ray Machine Program

Due to the increased utilization of ionizing radiation sources on the campus, it was deemed appropriate and necessary that a committee be appointed to help assure radiological safety. This committee, the Radiological Safety Committee (RSC), was appointed on April 26, 1957. At the same time, a Radiological Safety Officer (RSO) was designated by the President of Oklahoma State University (OSU). The RSC was formed to oversee the use of various radiation sources regulated by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.  The RSC was also given oversight of those items, specifically radiation producing machines, which are regulated by the State of Oklahoma under the auspices of the state Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).

The State has entered into a working arrangement with the University under which the State has granted the University a permit to possess and use certain radiation producing machines.  A permit is subject to the recognition by the University and its staff of certain rules and procedures, and delegates responsibility to the University for possession, use, storage and disposal of radiation machines. This delegation of responsibility has been made with the understanding that certain, mandatory controls will be put in place by the University.  These mandatory controls are set forth in Section 252 of Oklahoma Administrative Code (OAC), Chapter 410, Radiation Management.

The DEQ reserves to itself:

1.      certain rights to revoke or cancel arrangements

2.      to inspect facilities

3.      to review procedures

The continued existence and renewal of the permit depends on the acceptance and observance of recognized procedures by all members of the staff of this University concerned in any way with the handling of radiation producing machines.
