 Due to the increased
utilization of ionizing radiations on the campus, it was deemed appropriate
and necessary that a committee be appointed to help assure radiological
safety. This committee was appointed on April 26, 1957, and at the same
time a Radiological Safety Officer was designated by the President of
Oklahoma State University.
According to terms of the Energy Reorganization Act of 1974, amending
the Atomic Energy Act of 1954, the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission
(NRC) has authority over all operations involving byproduct material whether
produced in their facilities or not. The Commission has entered into a
working arrangement with the University under which it has granted a license
to possess and handle certain radioactive materials. A license is subject
to the recognition by the University and its staff of certain rules and
procedures, and delegates administrative responsibility to the University
for possession, use, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials.
The Commission reserves to itself certain rights to revoke or cancel arrangements,
to repossess or recall active materials, to inspect facilities, and to
review procedures. The continued existence and renewal of the license
depends on the acceptance and observance of recognized procedures by all
members of the staff of this University concerned in any way with the
handling of radioactive material. The purpose of such procedures is to
insure insofar as is humanly possible that radioactive materials are handled
with the least possible hazard to the individual worker, his associates,
the University facilities, and the general public.
