Training for Non-Users (i.e., persons who work in a facility where radioactive materials/sources are used, but do not work directly with the radioactive materials/sources) will not require training from the Radiation Safety staff. However, it is the responsibility and obligation of the lab manager and/or Authorized User to ensure that non-users in proximity to areas where radiological materials and/or devices are used or stored receive the appropriate safety training. Non-users are encouraged to view the General Radiation Safety Training slide presentation but are not required to take the exam.
Authorized Users are responsible for maintaining training records for all persons for whom training is required. Updates and/or confirmation of these personnel are required on the Quarterly Reports. The Laboratory Personnel Update link provided above allows you to notify the Office of University Research Compliance and Radiation Safety Office of changes electronically, and you are highly encouraged to utilize this process.
Unless they fall under categories 1-7 above, animal caretakers will undergo laboratory-specific training only, and this training will be provided by the laboratory manager or authorized user. However, Lab Animal Resources senior management staff and technicians are encouraged to view the General Radiation Safety Training slide presentation by are not required to take the exam.
Training for all individuals in categories 1-5 and 7 above is provided by the Radiation Safety Office. New personnel should be trained within 30 days of the start of their employment in that category. For those personnel requiring a radiation badge, the individual cannot work with radioactive materials/sources until a badge is issued by the Radiation Safety Office. Persons in category 6 will receive their training as part of the orientation provided by the Radiation Safety Officer.
If training lapses for any individual in categories 1-5 and 7, that individual has 30 days to be re-trained. If re-training has not been performed after 30 days that individual can no longer perform tasks related to radioactive materials/sources, as per his/her job description within categories 1-5 and 7.The Chief of Police is responsible for ensuring that relevant personnel in Category 6 have current training.
